Breaking News: Elected mayor Mark Meredith arrested in corruption probe

Friday, March 06, 2009, 09:40

ELECTED mayor Mark Meredith was today arrested in connection with the police inquiry into alleged corruption at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

He was picked up by detectives from Staffordshire Police's major investigations department this morning.

His arrest comes exactly a week after Tory councillor Roger Ibbs was arrested on suspicion of corruption in public office.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said today that a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and complicity in corruption in public office.

He has been taken to an unnamed police station in the county for questioning.

Why isn't Steve Batkin on the BNP Euro candidates list for the West Midlands? Guess who's at the top of the list? MI5's man Darby, who doesn't even live in the region or England! Steve Batkin is the real Racial Nationalist hero of Stoke, not Gri££n's lackeys!

Decision time for Meredith amid corruption probe
Saturday, March 07, 2009, 09:30ELECTED mayor Mark Meredith is considering his political future today after being arrested by police in connection with a corruption inquiry rocking Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
The 43-year-old was arrested at his Ash Bank home yesterday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office and complicity in corruption in public office.
Detectives quizzed Mr Meredith, pictured, for a number of hours before bailing him late last night.
It comes as the council's interim council manager, Chris Harman, was preparing to meet Mr Meredith early next week to discuss the mayor's options.
He has also scheduled an 11am meeting on Monday with key councillors to inform them of any developments.

He said: "These are matters I would expect to take up with the elected mayor.
"There is no reason why he cannot continue in office if he chooses to do so."
Mr Harman has already written to the council's 12,000 staff telling them it is 'business as usual' despite the arrest.
If Mr Meredith does resign, it is likely deputy elected mayor councillor Mohammed Pervez, who stepped into the executive role yesterday, will take power.
The arrest is the second to hit the council in a week. Police picked up councillor Roger Ibbs last Friday as part of the inquiry relating to the proposal to close the splash pool at Dimensions leisure centre, in Burslem.
Group leaders on the council were told of the latest arrest yesterday morning.
Potteries Alliance leader councillor Peter Kent-Baguley said: "Regardless of whether there has been any wrongdoing, we now have a lame duck elected mayor."
Newly-appointed Conservative and Independent Alliance leader councillor Ross Irving said: "Decisions about his immediate future are for Mark to make.
"It's too early to make any judgments."
Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Mark Fisher said: "It is usual in these circumstances for people to take a back seat while they are being investigated."
Mr Meredith, who has been bailed until June, was unavailable for comment.

If Steve Batkin was on the BNP list and he got elected as he has done in his own right.

I think that Griffin would shit himself.

Griffin is not one of us, and probably never was.

p.s. Why is Batkin not on the list for the Euro elections ?
