Today the M.E.N. urges David Cameron to act so Manchester can play its part to help repair the lives of the stricken refugees from Syria.

The wretched tide of refugees – hundreds of thousands of them, risking their lives to flee persecution – need our help. And today the M.E.N. urges David Cameron to act so Manchester can play its part to help repair the lives of the stricken refugees from Syria.

Manchester has a history of welcoming those fleeing persecution and oppression. Our existing Syrian community, our Chinese community, our Jewish community – they are all testaments to that.
These destitute, terrified people are not some perverse test of our borders, or of our immigration policy. They are a test of our humanity.
Since the start of the year, Britain has given sanctuary to little more than 200 people escaping terror in Syria; terror few of us here can imagine.
Germany, by contrast, is expecting up to one million by the end of this year. David Cameron should think again.
If, as a country we define ourselves as one of fair play and decency, this shows him – and consequently us – to be lacking.
In sticking to his guns, in repeatedly insisting we cannot take our fair share of refugees, the Prime Minister may believe he is in touch with public opinion. We believe he is wrong.

He may argue the real solution to this crisis is long-term peace in Syria and the overthrow of Isis, while in the meantime other countries can shoulder the burden of international conflict’s human cost. We believe he is wrong.
Long-term peace in Syria is, of course, the ultimate goal.
But a long-term strategy is cold comfort to those lying on Hungarian train tracks clutching infants, or to those whose children have literally washed up on Europe’s beaches.
Mr Cameron may want to play to public concern over economic immigration, to splits within his party. He may want to demonstrate a show of strength to his European partners. We believe he is wrong.
Some political issues are too big for politics. They are simply a matter of humanity, of morality. A matter of life and death.
Mr Cameron is already being deluged with demands to change his stance. Manchester must add its voice to that clamour.
Today, Lucy Powell MP has issued a rallying cry to the government: fix your policy and the city will play its part. Help us to help them. She is right.
Manchester will not – must not – turn its back. But we can’t help unless Mr Cameron acts now to allow us to help.
