The Truth at last about Stoke BNP ? - Defector damages BNP election plan

THE BNP's hopes of winning a maiden Parliamentary seat in Stoke-on-Trent are in disarray today following the defection of one of its most popular members.

Alby Walker now intends to stand against the far-right party's deputy leader, Simon Darby, in the General Election.
Mr Darby has set his sights firmly on snatching Labour MP Mark Fisher's Stoke-on-Trent Central seat.

And he had confidently predicted that Councillor Walker was to manage his campaign.
Mr Darby sees the seat as winnable, due to public discontent with mainstream politicians, and is bullish about his chances.

But The Sentinel can exclusively reveal that, far from masterminding Mr Darby's campaign, Councillor Walker actually intends to stand against him as an independent candidate.
The embarrassing blow comes as Mr Darby and BNP leader Nick Griffin are due to launch their national election strategy, and their challenge for the Stoke Central seat, in the city today.
Councillor Walker's move is likely to split the right-wing vote, as he has a personal following in his own Abbey Green ward.

Speaking yesterday, Mr Darby seemed to have no idea that his former ally would be fighting him for the same seat.

He said: "I don't think that's the case at all. I've not heard anything about that.
"I know that anything can happen in politics, but I wouldn't have thought that was true."
He added: "It was Alby that asked me to stand and offered to be my election agent, so I can't see him standing against me for the same seat."

But when confronted yesterday about rumours of his political defection from the BNP, Councillor Walker admitted he is planning to quit the party and stand against Mr Darby.

He said: "I am not going to deny the rumours about standing as an independent candidate, although I would need to find a financial backer in order to make that happen.
"I was going to walk away from politics, but so many people in my ward have begged me to stand because they feel I have worked hard for them as a councillor.

"I am therefore considering standing for re-election as an independent councillor as well as standing for the Parliamentary seat."

Mr Walker, who stood down as the BNP's city council group leader without warning last month, said he had become increasingly disenchanted with politics and wanted to focus on helping residents.

He said: "I'm fed up of party politics. I believe it is fragmenting the council and hurting the city because nothing is getting done.
"Being a councillor has really opened my eyes and I realise that the only important thing is the residents and the community."

He added: "I have been heartened by the approaches I have had from many people in my ward asking me to stand, but I am only willing to stand as an independent and work for local residents."

Wootton Bassett 'Facebook' campaigner receives death threat from left-wing socialists !



Campaigner Jo Cleary fights Wootton Bassett protests

A Herne Bay mum protesting against the planned extremist march through Wootton Bassett says she's received death threats.

Jo Cleary, 43, from Broomfield, set up a facebook group attacking the campaign after radical group Islam4UK announced plans to parade through the town with empty coffins to symbolise the Muslims 'mercilessly murdered' in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This week she's been sent an email making threats against her life.

Threats have also been sent to fellow campaigner Lucy Aldridge, whose 18-year-old son Will was killed in Afghanistan.

It's thought the threats are from an anti-racism group, rather than a Muslim organisation.

Mum-of-four Jo said: "The threat came through on an email. It was quite handy as I was actually talking to the police at the time, so they have the email now. Special Branch are involved and have offered me full protection.

"It beggars belief someone could be of the mindset where they think it's acceptable to threaten a mum who buried her 18-year-old soldier son six months ago."

Jo, who runs a support group for soldiers and their families, said she is not scared by whoever is behind the threats.

"I'm not going to stop because of them. The most they've probably worn is a school uniform. The day they don a uniform and fight for Queen and country and then come back and have ago at me, then I'll listen, but don't sit with a monitor and a keyboard and expect me to feel frightened."

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary provoked outrage after announcing 500 hard-line members of Islam4UK would march on Wootton Bassett - a town renowned for honouring Britain's fallen troops.

Since his outburst photographer Jo has appeared on Sky News, GMTV, BBC, ITV and even CNN expressing her views about the stunt.

We have been told the news that the Islam4UK group are planning on disrespecting the dead by marching through Wootton Bassett at some point. On their website they have not given out a date as of yet.

We are not letting these people march through British towns, which are renowned for the repatriation services for the poor soldiers who have died in Afghanistan, unopposed. The Swindon and Thames valley NF's will be getting some kind of demo organized. We need everyone who is available to turn up.

At the moment the date is unknown, but we will let everyone know as soon as we know.

PETROL PRICES TO SOAR IN DAYS



Motorists will bear the brunt of Labour's tax increases

PETROL prices could soar by up to 10p a litre thanks to a string of tax rises, drivers were warned today.


Unleaded could even rocket to a record high of £1.25 a litre if crude oil costs rise over the coming year.

The price surge is set to start on New Year’s Day when VAT returns to 17.5 per cent, triggering a 2.4p-a-litre rise in petrol costs. More increases in fuel duty will kick in later in 2010.

Hugh Blaydon, of the Association of British Drivers, said: “It is just madness to take people’s money this way. The cost of fuel in this country is as high as it is because too much of it is tax – 70 per cent is pure revenue for the Treasury.

“Motorists are seen as a convenient cash cow by the Chancellor and it’s always the poorest people that are worst affected.”

Luke Bosdet, spokesman for motoring group the AA, said: “It is a really dismal prospect for 2010. The pressure on prices will be enormous. Drivers have reached breaking point and they can’t afford to absorb any extra costs into their budgets.”

The VAT increase will cost consumers around £11billion within a year as it ramps up the price of goods, from new clothes and electrical goods to household bills. But drivers will be at the sharp end of the tax hike because most forecourts will slap it straight on to their pump prices on Friday.

Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer, has pledged to freeze VAT at 15 per cent on thousands of products after January 1 but will add the higher tax rate straight on to its petrol prices.

The average price of unleaded fuel yesterday was 107.66p a litre, compared with 87.85p this time last year. Diesel was 109.30p a litre, up from 99.52p a litre a year ago.

RMI Petrol, which represents two thirds of the UK’s 9,000 forecourts, predicts pump prices could soar 5p a litre by April and by 10p a litre by the end of 2010 because of various tax hikes.

Its chairman Brian Madderson warned that petrol costs could rise even more sharply if the price of crude oil soars.

He said: “The predicted 10p per litre rise does not take into consideration any increase in the world oil price which could add another 3p to 5p per litre to forecourt inflation. We might well see pump prices in the second half of 2010 in the range 120p to 125p per litre.”

The Government will add another 1p a litre plus inflation to fuel duty in April and at the same time withdraw a duty incentive it currently gives refiners for producing biofuel.

Another feared hike in VAT to 20 per cent combined with a possible 2p a litre fuel duty hike in late 2010 would slap another 5p a litre to pump prices.

AA spokesman Mr Bosdet claimed drivers had already got a raw deal from the Government when it reduced VAT to 15 per cent in November 2008 because the Chancellor increased fuel duty by 2p at the same time.

He urged drivers to write to their MPs demanding action on the soaring cost of fuel.

Adrian Tink, motoring strategist at the RAC, said: “It looks like in 2010 the assault on motorists’ pockets will continue from Government.

“The really worrying thing is not only are you being assaulted by your own Government but you have also got the problem of world oil prices.”

Oil costs on the global market hovered at around 79 dollars a barrel yesterday, close to their 2009 high point of 82 dollars.
