Marine Le Pen runs for Calais mayorship to Fix Migrant Crisis
The
Leader of France’s National Front party, Marine Le Pen, is running for
the presidency of the northern region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Calais is
suffering migrant overcrowding problems, that the regional government
has ignored.
“There’s
no time to lose,” Le Pen said in an interview on France’s TELETV. “The
situation [in Calais] is degrading fast and we have to act now.”
Marine
Le Pen said that she is planning to “protect the people of
Nord-Pas-de-Calais, who have been neglected by the Socialist majority.”
A
recent OpinionWay poll has shown that Le Pen is likely to win. The
regional elections take place in December 2015, with her position as
mayor starting January 1st, 2016. This is a big move for France in the
right direction, a country that has been very strongly liberal.
The
French port of Calais is a popular destination for migrants to cross
over to Great Britain. Around 2,000 refugees are currently living in
Calais camps, most of whom are welfare tourists, simply looking for the
best place to live for free. The conditions in the Calais migrant camps
are very poor. Migrants remain at the camps until they can find a way to
illegally smuggle themselves into the United Kingdom, usually by
sneaking aboard trucks.
Since
becoming leader of the National Front, Le Pen, who took over leadership
from her father, has repeatedly stated that she stands for a radical
change in political priorities and intends to change policies in order
to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants in France.
