Russian arms 'to deter foreign intervention in Syria'

Russia says it will go ahead with deliveries of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, and that the arms will help deter foreign intervention.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the missiles were a "stabilising factor" that could dissuade "some hotheads" from entering the conflict.
Russia also criticised an EU decision not to renew an arms embargo on Syria.
The decision came as the BBC heard evidence that 200 people were killed in a massacre in western Syria this month.
More than 80,000 people have been killed and 1.5 million have fled Syria since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in 2011, according to UN estimates.

While lifting the EU arms embargo is theoretically good news for the fractious Syrian opposition, it is clearly going to be some time before it has any effect on the battlefield balance. Its authors hope the decision will send a strong enough signal to the Assad regime that it is time to hand over power. That is extremely unlikely. It is hard facts on the ground that count for a regime that has shown determination to fight to the end to stay in power.
While European arms supplies remain for the moment theoretical, the step has stirred an angry reaction - possibly even an escalation - from the Russians. They've said the move jeopardises efforts to convene a peace conference, and that they plan to honour a prior contract to supply Syria with advanced S-300 air defence missiles. Israel sees that as a threat to its own security, and has warned that it "would know what to do".
The stakes are clearly getting higher. But for the rebels, at least the eventual possibility of carefully-controlled arms deliveries is there, in what looks like being a bloody, long-haul struggle.

'No deadline'

On Monday, the EU said member states would be able to decide their own policy on sending arms to Syria, after foreign ministers were unable to reach the unanimous decision required to extend the current arms embargo past Saturday.

However, in a declaration announced after 12 hours of talks, it agreed not to "proceed at this stage with the delivery" of equipment.
The EU's Foreign Affairs Council is to review this position before 1 August, in light of fresh developments to end the conflict including the ongoing US-Russia peace initiative.
Speaking to the BBC, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said the 1 August date did not represent a deadline, and that the UK could start arming Syrian rebels from now, although it had no active plans to do so.
A US state department spokesman said the US supported the EU's move.
The Syrian foreign ministry said the decision showed the EU's "obstruction of international efforts to contribute to the achievement of a political settlement".

Why Russia sells Syria arms

Russia says the move directly harms the prospects of an international peace conference proposed by Moscow and Washington that would be held next month.

"A whole range of actions that have been undertaken, not without the participation and not without the support of our Western partners including the United States and France... are serving to undermine the idea of calling a conference," Russian media quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Tuesday.
Russia has repeatedly blocked efforts to put more pressure on Mr Assad. Along with the US, Moscow has been leading efforts to organise an international peace conference on Syria next month.

Mr Ryabkov said the contract for the S-300 missile systems had been signed several years ago.

"We consider these supplies a stabilising factor and believe such steps will deter some hotheads from considering scenarios that would turn the conflict international with the involvement of outside forces," he was quoted as telling journalists, in a coded reference to the use of Nato warplanes in Libya.
The S-300 is a highly capable surface-to-air missile system that, as well as targeting aircraft, also has the capacity to engage ballistic missiles.

"I hope they will not leave, and if, God forbid, they reach Syria, we will know what to do," he said.
The EU embargo, first imposed in May 2011, applies to the rebels as much as the Syrian government.
Britain and France had been pressing for the ability to send weapons to what they call moderate opponents of President Assad, saying it would push Damascus towards a political solution to the two-year conflict.

George Jabboure Netto, a spokesman for the opposition Syrian National Council said the dropping of the arms embargo was a "step in the right direction", though a spokesman for another grouping, the Syrian National Coalition, said the move might be "too little too late".
The Syrian opposition has not said whether it will attend next month's peace conference, and was on Tuesday locked in talks in Istanbul, Turkey, as an unofficial deadline to decide on its attendance passed.

After a British soldier wearing a Help for Heroes charity T-shirt was run over, stabbed and slashed with machetes and a meat cleaver, and beheaded, the Tory government advised its soldiers that it is probably best not to appear in uniform on the streets of their capital.

Both murderers were wounded by police. One was photographed and recorded. His message:
“There are many, many (verses) throughout the Quran that says we must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I apologize that women had to witness this today, but in our land women have to see the same. Your people will never be safe.”

According to ITV, one murderer, hands dripping blood, ranted, “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.”

Both killers are Muslim converts of African descent, and both are British born.

Wednesday also, Stockholm and its suburbs ended a fourth night of riots, vandalism and arson by immigrant mobs protesting the police shooting of a machete-wielding 69-year-old.

The same day these stories ran, the Washington Post carried a front-page photo of Ibrahim Todashev, martial arts professional and friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who, with brother Dzhokhar, set off the bombs at the Boston Marathon massacre.

Todashev, another Chechen, had been shot to death by FBI agents, reportedly after he confessed to his and Tamerlan’s role in a triple murder in Waltham, Mass.
Though Tamerlan had been radicalized and Moscow had made inquiries about him, he had escaped the notice of U.S. authorities. Even after he returned to the Caucasus for six months, sought to contact extremists, then returned to the USA, Tamerlan still was not on Homeland Security’s radar.
His father, granted political asylum, went back to the same region he had fled in fear. His mother had been arrested for shoplifting. Yet none of this caused U.S. officials to pick up Tamerlan, a welfare freeloader, and throw the lot of them out of the country.

One wonders if the West is going to wake up to the new world we have entered, or adhere to immigration policies dating to a liberal era long since dead.
It was in 1965, halcyon hour of the Great Society, that Ted Kennedy led Congress into abolishing a policy that had restricted immigration for 40 years, while we absorbed and Americanized the millions who had come over between 1890 and 1920.

The “national origins” feature of that 1924 law mandated that ships arriving at U.S. ports carry immigrants from countries that had provided our immigrants in the past. We liked who we were.
Immigration policy was written to reinforce the Western orientation and roots of America, 90 percent of whose population could by 1960 trace its ancestry to the Old Continent.

But since 1965, immigration policy has been run by people who detest that America and wanted a new nation that looked less like Europe and more like a continental replica of the U.N. General Assembly.
They wanted to end America’s history as the largest and greatest of Western nations and make her a nation of nations, a new society and a new people, more racially, ethnically, religiously and culturally diverse than any nation on the face of the earth.

Behind this vision lies an ideology, an idee fixe, that America is not a normal nation of blood and soil, history and heroes, but a nation erected upon an idea, the idea that anyone and everyone who comes here, raises his hand and swears allegiance to the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights becomes, de facto, not just a legal citizen but an American.

But that is no more true than to say that someone who arrives in Paris from Africa or the Middle East and raises his hand to declare allegiance to the Rights of Man thereby becomes a Frenchman.
What is the peril into which America and the West are drifting?

Ties of race, religion, ethnicity and culture are the prevailing winds among mankind and are tearing apart countries and continents. And as we bring in people from all over the world, they are not leaving all of their old allegiances and animosities behind.

Many carry them, if at times dormant, within their hearts.

And if we bring into America – afflicted by her polarized politics, hateful rhetoric and culture wars – peoples on all sides of every conflict roiling mankind, how do we think this experiment is going to end?
The immigration bill moving through the Senate, with an amnesty for 11 to 12 million illegals already here, and millions of their relatives back home, may write an end to more than just the Republican Party.

1) Why would the Zionists who in their beloved Israel have one of the most restrictive immigration laws in the world, at the same time work to influence much of the American and European media and government to pursue open borders and mass immigration? If they think mass immigration of non-Jewish people into Israel is a danger to the fabric of their society, can they not know of its dangers to ours?

2) Do you know that Jewish organizations have been the driving force behind mass immigration into European nations? Are 'cosy' links between Help for Heroes and the MoD harming other charities that help injured servicemen?

Many people will, I am sure, be surprised at veterans' criticism of the incredibly high profile charity Help for Heroes.
Help for Heroes has put millions of pounds into improving rehabilitation facilities for injured servicemen, but this has prompted suggestions that the charity's relationship with the MoD is 'too cosy'.
For those of us who have been involved in the sector, this comes as no shock.

Stately: The the Help for Heroes' flagship recovery centre is Tedworth House, a Grade II-listed building in Tidworth, Wilts., which the charity spent £20 million renovating

Set up by Bryn and Emma Parry, best friends of the then Chief of the General Staff’s wife Lady Dannatt, it has raised millions of pounds in the name of helping injured troops.
But as Help for Heroes' relationship with the MoD has grown stronger, other charities have found themselves squeezed out and forgotten. These are charities that have been in existence for years without making tabloid headlines. Their line has always been, generally speaking: ‘we work with Help for Heroes and are very grateful for the work they have done in raising the profile of injured soldiers.’ But in the background, they are fuming.
Working for the Royal British Legion and the Army Benevolent Fund, I've seen how many charities face a continual struggle to get their voices heard and to provide services to injured soldiers and their families. It took years to get permission for an information desk at Selly Oak hospital, informing families of the assistance and care offered by a range of charities. Meanwhile, Help for Heroes was free to distribute care packs with flip flops and t-shirts emblazoned with their logos.
I have even been witness to cases where Help for Heroes have opposed other charities using the word ‘heroes’ in any of their PR or marketing materials.
Indeed, it's easy to get the impression that Help for Heroes enjoys preferential access to and treatment from the MoD. I’ve fought with MoD press officers for the right to have serving soldiers who have been helped by the charities I’ve worked for attend events and assist with press coverage to increase awareness and donations. Yet the same day that one charity were refused permission for a beneficiary to appear on the media, Help for Heroes was able to do a stunt with a serving double amputee on the steps of Downing Street.

Help for Heroes slammed by troops for subsidising building projects rather than helping injured veterans

This close relationship is understandable; the MoD must have wondered at their good fortune at having a charity which helps provide the facilities they should be providing, without the inconvenience of raising taxes or cutting other services. But many veterans argue the money would be better spent on more urgent individual requirements.
Indeed, many people working in armed forces welfare charities feel it is not the job of a charity to fund building programmes which should be undertaken by the government, especially when it is taking money and profile away from the charities who have been doing the unsung, less glamorous work with individuals which the government does not fund.
To clarify, while a soldier is serving in the Army he is part of the rehabilitation programme, which means that he gets the best care available and the latest technologies. It’s only when he leaves the armed forces and becomes reliant on the NHS and local community services that the problems tend to start, and the charities step in. In many cases, these charities are the ones being squeezed out by Help for Heroes.
Last year I worked with a veteran and his young family trying to get him council accommodation on the ground floor because his injuries made walking up flights of stairs difficult. In the end it was Haig Homes who came to his rescue. Not the local authority and not Help for Heroes.

I’ve known a triple amputee who had to rely on grants to have ramps provided in his mother’s home to enable him to visit his family when he gets leave, and another who needed doors widening and access provisions so he could spend the weekends with his fiancee. That money did not come from Help for Heroes.
Many soldiers have been injured from Iraq and Afghanistan but most of the money these days is still spent on assistance such as rent payments, white goods, training programmes or building adjustments. It’s far less glamorous than a shiny, new building with brave soldiers - and my goodness they are brave and determined - pictured outside cheering.
Personally, I raise money for a little known charity called Pilgrim Bandits. I was told about it by Ben Parkinson, one of Britain’s most seriously injured soldiers, who is one of their patrons. I asked him why he is so involved in this charity rather than one of the more well -known ones to which he replied: 'Everyone thought I’d never do physical stuff again because I needed a carer and didn’t think I could, but Pilgrim Bandits say everyone can do everything that they can and all they do is let you make it happen.'
I’d never tell people which charity to give or raise money for, but in the case of the Armed Forces, I’d advise people to look for the charities where the injured soldiers are most involved.

Female pensioner, 85, arrested, handcuffed and taken away in police van after hurling abuse at Muslims outside her local mosque

An 85-year-old woman has this afternoon been arrested and handcuffed by police allegedly for insulting Muslims outside a mosque.

The pensioner was said to have shouted ‘go back to your own country’ as Muslims gathered for Friday prayers at Gillingham Mosque in the Kent town.

She was standing at a bus stop in the street outside the mosque when the incident took place.

According to eyewitnesses, the elderly woman was spoken to by police officers, before being handcuffed and then put in a police van and driven away at wound 1.45pm.

NWN : It's a wonder my old Mum and Dad, both WW2 veterans, haven't been arrested by our 'oh so brave Police'.

The Police ought to be locked up here, and the key thrown away.
