Fingerprints can reveal race and sex
By Nic Fleming, Science Correspondent Last Updated: 7:37am BST 03/08/2007
A new fingerprinting technique that can identify the race and sex, and possibly the diet of suspects has been developed.
Scientists have shown that using a gelatine-based gel and high-tech chemical analysis can provide significant clues to a persons identity even if police do not hold existing fingerprint records. The new method can pick up tiny traces of substances such as gunpowder, drugs, or biological or chemical weapons.
Preliminary tests, highlighted in this months edition of the journal Analytical Chemistry, also suggest it could be used to provide crucial court evidence by pinpointing the precise time - accurate to the nearest hour - that prints were left at crime scenes.
Prof Sergei Kazarian, from Imperial College Londons Department of Chemical Engineering, who led the team that developed the technique, said: Our trials show that this technique could play a significant role in the fight against crime. The combined operational advantages and benefits for forensic scientists of tape lifting prints and spectroscopic imaging really maximises the amount of information one can obtain from fingerprints. By focussing on what is left in a fingerprint after periods of time, scientists could potentially gauge how old a crime scene is.
Studying what happens to prints, when they are exposed to high temperatures, could also be particularly significant, especially in arson cases where lifting prints has been notoriously hard. Chemical residues containing a few millionths of a gram of fluid can be found on all fingerprints, however they are often distorted or destroyed by conventional techniques.
Prof Kazarian found that using commercial gelatine based tape, already used by police to collect footprint, can provide a simple method for collection and transportation of prints. He analysed prints left by volunteers under spectroscopic microscope providing a detailed picture of its chemical make-up.
Particular chemical compositions were found to provide specific clues to the identity of the volunteer who left the fingerprint.
Strong traces of urea, a chemical found in urine, suggested a man left the print.
Lower levels of the chemical made it more likely to be from a women.
Specific amino acids indicated whether the suspect was a vegetarian or meat-eater, and different fatty acid profiles suggested provided clues to their racial origins. (NWN: Our emphasis)
Prof Kazarian added: In the courtroom of the near future, chemical images could feature as key evidence. "I hope our work assists law enforcement authorities to bring dangerous criminals to justice. Forensics experts both from the Home Office and the US government are known to be studying the results of the initial tests with interest.

Griffin's attack-dogs drive out Jonathan Bowden.
HAS A BNP PURGE COMMENCED?
Please note the the e-mail below which had been
forwarded to Tony Hancock and which he forwarded to his list.
It is a great shame that the BNP is so corrupt that
inside information about it sometimes comes from the opponents of British
nationalism rather than from a nationalist source. But truth is truth,
regardless of source.
I will be issuing an ELC about the whole leadership election and Constitutional fiasco of the BNP in a couple of days. While I will cover a lot of issues wider than just the recent BNP
leadership election, my lead-inwill be that Griffin saw Chris Jackson's challenge as a "stalking horse" operation. Griffin just did not credit that there was NO challenger of substance waiting in the wings.
Desperate not to lose his BNP money-cow; frantic at the thought of a newcomer stepping in and having the party's financial affairs over the past nine years made the subject of a forensic
accountant's examination, Griffin put on his thinking cap and deduced that the only
credible senior BNP member waiting in the wings to take his job is Jonathan
Bowden, a leading BNP official who had the temerity to sign Jackson's nomination paper in the recent election for the party chairmanship.
I am told that Griffin's correspondence to Michael Easter, Jackson's
campaign manager, was hysterical -- hysterical with anxiety, not with jokes!
I hope Easter publishes these exchanges so that we can all have a laugh.
It was widely discussed earlier this month that Griffin had been shocked at the large number of senior party officials who had signed Jackson's nomination paper. Leading that group of senior
members was accomplished platform speaker Jonathan Bowden. Griffin is sure to have noted that next year Bowden would have been a BNP member for five years -- and thus come into possession of the full set of qualifiications required to stand as a candidate for the BNP chairmanship.
The crucial factor which will have resolved Griffin to set his hounds on Bowden was the election result.
Griffin will doubtless trumpet that he got "90 per cent !!" (3,363), and Jackson "only got 10 per cent!" (337).
But the crucial figure is that ONLY 43 PER CENT OF THE MEMBERSHIP VOTED.
Thus a substantial majority of the members of the BNP, given an opportunity to endorse Nick Griffin as their Chairman, either refrained from doing so or voted for an almost unknown former Regional Organiser.
Such tepid waters of support do not buoy up leaders -- they tempt challengers to dip their toes in.....
The Tyndallite/"Hardliner" faction which backed Jackson have not emerged from this affair covered with glory, but it did sufficient to goad the paranoid Griffin to display his weakness to the most fickle ("ungrateful") of all audiences: the membership of a political party.
Griffin's action against Bowden may come to be seen as a crucial mistake. It certainly has the potential to trigger-off a sequence of unintended and unforseen consequences.
If any of you have any further information which may add to the next ELC,
please sent the same to me a.s.a.p.
Yours,
Martin Webster.

Griffin fails to pay up again !Do you remember this below article from this blog on 4th.July 2007 ?
Griffin promised the BNP would pay the funds for fighting this Court action. Guess what ? Nick Griffin again reneges on the payment, and thus leaving Burnley BNP people with court costs of over £2,500 +.
These hard working BNP people should not have to suffer the truly shocking behaviour of the BNP party leader trying to avoid payment.
This site would like to ask BNP members and supporters to send donations to help these people to: Chris Jackson C/O. PO BOX 15, Todmorden, OL14 7NQ.

Local BNP activists take legal action -
Rosegrove & Lowerhouse Ward - Burnley - JOHN ROWE
After the 'drawing of lots' to decide the outcome of this ward in Burnley at last May's elections, John Rowe, plus other local activists are now taking legal action costing a great deal of money.
This could result in yet another BNP Councillor in Burnley.
Why has it been left to Burnley activists to finance this action and not BNP HQ ?
The Burnley activists need a Barrister to help in their court action, so why has BNP HQ NOT provided any expertise both in legal terms and elections ?
Why has the BNP HQ left Burnley BNP to do it all themselves ?
Just what is the purpose of BNP HQ ?
BNP HQ is fully aware of this possible winning of this council seat.
Of course, Nick Griffin is more interested in trying to rake money in, in some field in Derbyshire for the RWB. So no time to win a Council seat, eh Nick !

Sobering statistic
Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq , here ' s a sobering statistic.
There has been a monthly average of 60,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22months, and a total of 2,867 deaths.
That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers. The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period.
That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq .
Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington DC .*
*They already have they just commute in every day.

MI5 'is keeping bomber alive'
SEVERELY burned Glasgow Airport attack suspect Kafeel Ahmed is being kept alive on the orders of MI5, senior police sources have told Scotland on Sunday.
SEVERELY burned Glasgow Airport attack suspect Kafeel Ahmed is being kept alive on the orders of MI5, senior police sources have told Scotland on Sunday.
Ahmed has third degree burns to 90% of his body and virtually no chance of surviving but insiders claim the security services are keeping him alive to avoid a backlash from radical Muslims.
The 27-year-old doctor is on life support at Glasgow Royal Infirmary but two separate police sources - as well as medical staff - claim the decision to keep him alive has more to do with politics than clinical judgment.
One insider estimated the combined cost of round-the-clock security and medical treatment for Ahmed for the month since the attack had reached £150,000.
On June 30, two men allegedly drove a vehicle packed with petrol and gas cannisters into the main terminal building at the airport, causing a huge fire and widespread panic.
Ahmed, a doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, has been in a coma since the incident and most burns experts believe he is already effectively dead. But last week it emerged that special shark skin implants costing £20,000 were being used to treat his injuries.
A senior police source said: "It has been made very clear to the doctors by the 'powers that be' that they are to do anything and everything to keep Ahmed alive."
Another police insider said: "Obviously, MI5 is hoping they will be able to speak to Ahmed but the possibility of him ever being fit for interview is virtually nil. The one thing the authorities do not want is anything to exacerbate the situation and they believe the longer he lives, the calmer things will get."
Ahmed was originally treated at his own hospital but a few days after the incident was transferred to the Royal Infirmary where he remains. A medical source said: "It was MI5 who wanted him moved because, at the time, they did not know if there were more suspects operating in the hospital. They made sure that it was known he was to be kept alive as long as possible."
Glasgow human rights lawyer Amar Anwar said: "It is barbaric that we are stooping to such levels against this individual, no matter how heinous the crimes he is accused of committing."
Another leading human rights lawyer, John Scott, said: "It is quite wrong for anyone to be dealt with differently medically because of who they are or what they are said to have done. It is entirely inappropriate to keep anyone alive for political reasons."
But Paul Martin, Labour's justice spokesman, said: "So many times, people seem to be more interested in the civil liberties of the individual rather than those of the majority. There were hundreds of people at the airport that day, what about their civil liberties?"
