 1st. July 1916   ................



The 36th Ulster Division,  launch their attack, and come out of their trenches in this famous painting.  There were almost 60,000 British casualties on that first day of the Battle of the Somme. Of whom almost 20,000 were killed in action . The biggest casualty list ever, for the British Army.

Today the whole of the British Army number just over 70,000 .
