 1st July 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme .


The picture is one that commemorates the 36th Ulster Division on that fateful day. It was the day of the biggest ever casualty list for the British Army. Over 60,000 + casualties were suffered. To put this in context , today the total numbers serving in the British Army are around 75,000 . Now that is a scary thought ?
