Hungary orders 100-mile Serbia border fence to keep out migrants

Foriegn minister says they are taking action to stop hundreds of thousands of migrants entering the country as EU is 'too slow to act'

Hungarian Minister of External Economy and Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto
Hungary has unveiled plans to erect a fence along its border with Serbia as part of a controversial anti-immigration drive, saying it “cannot afford to wait any longer” for the European Union to come up with a solution to the migration crisis.
ADVERTISING
"The Hungarian government has instructed the interior ministry to physically close the border with Serbia," Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister said on Wednesday, adding that preparations would be completed within a week.
The fence will be four metres high, 110 miles long, and may employ barbed wire, officials said.
Hungary is one of the main points of entry for migrants into the Schengen passport free zone and is witnessing a spike in migration, with about 57,000 people entering the country illegally so far this year, up sharply from 43,000 in all of 2014. 95 percent of those cross from Serbia, which is not a member of the EU but has started accession talks. Last year, Hungary received more refugees per capita than any other EU country apart from Sweden.
Leaching voters to the far-Right party Jobbik, the government has increasingly lost patience with efforts in Brussels to reach a solution to the surging inflows into the EU. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that a proposal to distribute migrants evenly throughout the 28 member states "borders on insanity", while Mr Szijjártó dismissed the EU's ”rather long and time-consuming” negotiations as he announced the Hungarian move on Wednesday.
But the fence plan drew immediate condemnation at home and abroad, evoking memories of the days of the Iron Curtain. The United Nations Refugee Agency said it would "place too many barriers" to the "inalienable human right" to seek asylum.
“This is a scandal,” a former senior diplomat in the region told the Telegraph. “Hungary, which was the first Communist country to dismantle the Iron Curtain, is now building a new curtain on its southern border."
“This is a very obvious diversionary tactic. There are many social and economic problems here. There are four million people (40 percent of Hungary’s population) living in poverty, ” the former diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Aleksandar Vucic, the Serbian prime minister, said he was "surprised and shocked" by the Hungarian government's plan to close the border with Serbia.
"I am surprised and shocked. We will discuss this decision with our Hungarian colleagues," Mr Vucic said live on RTS state television during a visit to Oslo.
The move will also prove unpopular with the EU border agency Frontex, which slammed a recent similar Bulgarian fencing project along its border with Turkey earlier in the year as a poor approach to tackling migration problems.
Mr Orbán has upped his anti-immigration rhetoric in recent weeks, calling migration "a threat to European civilisation” and suggesting that an EU internment camp be set up outside the bloc’s borders. He has also launched a “national consultation on immigration and terrorism” - condemned by his own European People's Party bloc in the European Parliament - which asks questions such as "Do you agree that mistaken immigration policies contribute to the spread of terrorism?"
The government is also running a state-funded billboard campaign, aimed at illegal migrants, which features such slogans as “If you come to Hungary, do not take the jobs of Hungarians.”
• 'Come to Hungary, we're already working in London' says pro-immigration billboard campaign
The United Nations has condemned the billboards, criticising them for attempting “to whip up xenophobia”, and on Wednesday launching its own counter-campaign highlighting the positive roles played by migrants within Hungary.
Political allies of the Hungarian government across the border in Serbia, home to a sizeable ethnic-Hungarian minority, defended the fence plan on Wednesday. István Pásztor, the leader of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians party, said the move will mean migrants will now "very likely avoid this area."
But the Pope Francis had harsh words for nations which refused to accept migrants, saying in his weekly audience that "people and institutions" who close doors to them should seek forgiveness from God.

Perhaps the world's conspiracy theorists have been right all along

We used to laugh at conspiracy theorists, but from Fifa to banking scandals and the Iraq War, it seems they might have been on to something after all, says Alex Proud

'I want to believe': Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) in The X Files  Photo: 20th Century Fox
Conspiracy theories used to be so easy.
You’d have your mate who, after a few beers, would tell you that the moon landings were faked or that the Illuminati controlled everything or that the US government was holding alien autopsies in Area 51. And you’d be able to dismiss this because it was all rubbish.
Look, you’d say, we have moon rock samples and pictures and we left laser reflectors on the surface and... basically you still don’t believe me but that’s because you’re mad and no proof on earth (or the moon) would satisfy you.
It’s true that there was always the big one which wasn’t quite so easily dismissed. This was the Kennedy assassination - but here you could be fairly sure that the whole thing was a terrible, impenetrable murky morass. You knew that some things never would be known (or would be released, partially redacted by the CIA, 200 years in the future). And you knew that whatever the truth was it was probably a bit dull compared to your mate’s flights of fantasy involving the KGB, the Mafia and the military-industrial complex. Besides, it all made for a lot of very entertaining films and books.

This nice, cozy state of affairs lasted until the early 2000s. But then something changed. These days conspiracy theories don’t look so crazy and conspiracy theorists don’t look like crackpots. In fact, today’s conspiracy theory is tomorrow’s news headlines. It’s tempting, I suppose, to say we live in a golden age of conspiracy theories, although it’s only really golden for the architects of the conspiracies. From the Iraq war to Fifa to the banking crisis, the truth is not only out there, but it’s more outlandish than anything we could have made up.

Of course, our real-life conspiracies aren’t much like The X-Files – they’re disappointingly short on aliens and the supernatural. Rather, they’re more like John Le Carre books. Shady dealings by powerful people who want nothing more than to line their profits at the expense of others. The abuse of power. Crazy ideologues who try and create their own facts for fun and profit. Corporations supplanting governments via regulatory capture.
So, what are some of our biggest conspiracies?

The Iraq War

The most disgusting abuse of power in a generation and a moral quagmire that never ends. America is attacked by terrorists and so, declares war on a country that had nothing whatsoever to do with the attacks, while ignoring an oil rich ally which had everything to do with them. The justification for war is based on some witches’ brew of faulty intelligence, concocted intelligence and ignored good intelligence. Decent people are forced to lie on an international stage. All sensible advice is ignored and rabid neo-con draft dodgers hold sway on military matters. The UK joins this fool’s errand for no good reason. Blood is spilled and treasure is spent.
The result is a disaster that was predicted only by Middle Eastern experts, post-conflict planners and several million members of the public. Thousands of allied troops and hundreds of thousands of blameless Iraqis are killed, although plenty of companies and individuals benefit from the US dollars that were shipped out, literally, by the ton. More recently, Iraq, now in a far worse state than it ever was under any dictator, has become an incubator for more terrorists, which is a special kind of geopolitical irony lost entirely on the war’s supporters.

And yet, we can’t really bring ourselves to hold anyone accountable. Apportioning responsibility would be difficult, painful and inconvenient, so we shrug as the men behind all this enjoy their well-upholstered retirements despite being directly and personally responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and trillions of wasted dollars. And the slow drip, drip of revelations continues, largely ignored by the public, despite the horrendous costs which (in the UK) could have been spent on things like the NHS or properly equipping our armed forces.

Fifa

The conspiracy du jour. We always knew Fifa was shonky and bribey, but most of us thought the more outlandish claims were just that. Not so. As it turns out, Fifa is a giant corruption machine and it now looks like every World Cup in the last three decades, even the ones we were cool about, like South Africa, could have been fixes.
Photo: AFP
On the plus side, it seems that something may be done, but it’ll be far too late to help honest footballing nations who missed their moment in the sun. For those who say "it’s only a stupid sport", well, recently we’ve heard accusations of arms deals for votes involving... wait for it... Saudi Arabia. The Saudi connection makes me wonder if, soon, we’ll be looking a grand unified conspiracy theory which brings together lots of other conspiracy theories under one corrupt, grubby roof.

The banking crisis

A nice financial counterpoint to Iraq. Virtually destroy the western financial system in the name of greed. Get bailed out by the taxpayers who you’ve been ripping off. And then carry on as if nothing whatsoever has happened. No jail, no meaningful extra regulation, the idea of being too big to fail as much of a joke as it was in 2005. Not even an apology. In fact, since the crisis you caused, things have got much better for you – and worse for everyone else. Much like Iraq, no-one has been held responsible or even acknowledged any wrongdoing. Again, this is partially because it’s so complicated and hard – but mainly because those who caused the crisis are so well represented in the governments of the countries who bailed them out. Oh, and while we’re at it, the banks played a part in the Fifa scandal. As conspiracy theorists will tell you, everything is connected.

Paedophiles

This one seems like a particularly dark and grisly thriller. At first it was just a few rubbish light entertainers. Then it was a lot more entertainers. Then we had people muttering about the political establishment – and others counter-muttering don’t be ridiculous, that’s a conspiracy theory. But it wasn’t. Now, it’s a slow-motion train crash and an endless series of glacial government inquiries. The conspiracy theorists point out that a lot of real stuff only seems to come out after the alleged perpetrators are dead or so senile it no longer matters. It’s hard to disagree with them. It’s also hard to imagine what kind of person would be so in thrall to power that they’d cover up child abuse.

And the rest

Where do you start? We could look at the EU and pick anything from its rarely signed-off accounts to the giant sham that let Greece join the Euro in the first place. We could look at UK defence procurement – and how we get so much less bang for our buck than France. We could peer at the cloying, incestuous relationship between the UK’s political class and its media moguls and how our leaders still fawn over a man whose poisonous control over so much of our media dates back to dodgy deal in 1981 that was denied for 30 years. We could look at the NSA and its intimate/ bullying relationship with tech companies. And we could go on and on and on.

But actually what we should be thinking is that a lot of this is what happens what you dismantle regulatory frameworks. This is what happens when you let money run riot and you allow industries to police themselves. This is what happens when the rich and powerful are endlessly granted special privileges, celebrated and permitted or even encouraged to place themselves above the law. And this is what happens when ordinary people feel bored by and excluded from politics, largely because their voices matter so little for the reasons above. Effectively, we are all living in Italy under Silvio Berlusconi. What’s the point in anything?

• When did the rich become so utterly horrible?
• The internet is now dominated by online lynch mobs

But actually, there is some hope. While the number of rich and powerful people who think they can get away with anything has undoubtedly grown, technology has made leaking much easier. Wikileaks may not be perfect, but it’s a lot better than no leaks at all. The other thing that gives me succour is the public’s view of the bankers. We still hate them, which is absolutely as it should be. And slowly this contempt is starting to hurt the masters of the universe. It’s notable that, recently, banking has started tumbling down the down the list of desirable careers. So, I suppose the solution is simple: we need more regulation, we need more transparency and we need more public shame and disgust. We might even get the last two; I’m less hopeful about the first.
In the X-Files, Fox Mulder’s famous catchphrase was, “I want to believe” but that’s because the conspiracy theories he dealt with were rather good fun. Ours, by contrast, tend to involve an endless procession of wealthy old men abusing their power. So I don’t want to believe any more. I want my kids to grow up in a world where conspiracy theories are something you laugh at.

HSBC and the world’s oldest drug cartel

OWP
HSBC’s core values are under scrutiny.  The bank has been implicated in one scandal after another, and  the current leadership claims to be wanting to restore the bank’s reputation.  But what reputation do they aim to restore?  Is it the airbrushed version of a bank rooted in “Scottish banking principles”, or is it an altogether darker reputation reflecting HSBC’s original role as a source of funding for the giant trade of opium into the Chinese markets in the nineteeth century?  As one blogger, based in Rochester, USA, put it in 2013: “When HSBC executives were caught late last year financing the Mexican and other drug cartels, they were returning to the company’s historic roots.”
As this article from Le Monde Diplomatique explains, HSBC was founded after the second of the Opium Wars, by which time the trade was already well established.  The founders included several opium traders who recognised the profitable banking opportunities presented by the new market.  As Le Monde Diplo explains:
Another Scotsman, Thomas Sutherland, had joined P&O. He devoted his career to the company, worked on the construction of new wharves in Hong Kong and became the Hong Kong superintendent of P&O as well as the first chairman of Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock in 1863. Opium made up 70% of maritime freight from India to China, where it was sold to the Chinese by British compradores, despite all efforts by the Chinese authorities to stop it.
Sutherland understood that the time was right for a commercial bank. In 1865 he and a few others founded the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. The board was chaired by Francis Chomley, and included the remarkable Thomas Dent, founder of Dent & Co. In 1839 a senior Chinese government official, Lin Zexu, known for his competence and moral standing, issued a warrant for Dent’s arrest in an attempt to close his warehouses, which infringed the Chinese ban on opium. That helped trigger the first opium war, which ended in August 1842 with the unequal treaty of Nanking.
After the second opium war (1856-60), the British and French imposed territorial concessions under foreign administration, the opening of Chinese ports to foreign trade and the legalisation of the opium trade. When Sutherland began the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, the conflict had been over for five years. The Chinese characters in the transliteration of its name are auspicious, and can be understood to mean gathering wealth.
HSBC’s first wealth came from opium from India, and later Yunan in China.
Winston Churchill famously wrote that history is written by the victors, which might explain why so little attention is paid in Britain to the infamous Opium Wars of the nineteenth century, which saw the Brits using their superior naval power to open up ‘free trade’ with China.  Opium — sourced initially from India — was by far and away the largest product traded by British merchants in return for Chinese silks, tea and porcelain.  Facing understandable resistance from Chinese Emperor Tao Kuang and Lin Tse-hsu, his governor-general of the Liang Hu vice-regency, who was determined to stifle opium trade in his province, the British merchants resorted to violence to destroy the Chinese ability to impose their own laws and social protections. As Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi put it:
If you’re rusty in your history of Britain’s various wars of Imperial Rape, the Second Opium War was the one where Britain and other European powers basically slaughtered lots of Chinese people until they agreed to legalize the dope trade (much like they had done in the First Opium War, which ended in 1842).
Opium trading was crucial to the British economy at that time.  Some have interpreted the Opium Wars as being primarily rooted in an ideological struggle between British economic liberals and Chinese protectionists, but Julie Lovell’s interpretation of the driving forces is probably closer to the truth:
In light of the British addiction to Chinese exports . . .  opium was the only commodity that saved the British balance of payments with Asia from ruinous deficit. Marchant argues that mid-century British merchants in China believed that a ‘just war’ should be fought to defend progress. In reality the British leaders of the opium trade through the 1830s and 1840s were far more interested in protecting their drug sales in order to fund lucrative retirement packages (one of their number, James Matheson, used such profits to buy a seat in Parliament and the Outer Hebridean island of Lewis).
For how much of the time since its inception has drugs money run through HSBC’s veins? You decide.

Bilderberg 2015: where criminals mingle with ministers........

Even a lecture on the convicted criminals due to arrive or a chat about ‘shameless’ HSBC didn’t deter Austria’s officers from yet another ID check

A sign in front of a police checkpoint on a road leading to the Interalpen-Hotel Tirol, venue of the Bilderberg conference.
I had three Austrian policemen in my hotel room last night. They stood there all grim faced with their fluorescent bibs, torches and sidearms. It was like the worst ever fancy dress party. I offered them a pilsner. They declined. They were too busy checking my ID that had been carefully checked 10 minutes prior at a police checkpoint. And carefully checked two minutes prior to that, at another police checkpoint.
This third check took so long, it was so late, and my patience was so thin, that eventually I took my shirt and trousers off in front of the officers. “I’m having a shower,” I explained, and went and had one. When I’d finished, I came out in my towel, thinking they might be gone. They weren’t. “Put your clothes on please and come to your car.” This party wasn’t getting any better.
Out at my car I couldn’t be bothered to get into the whole ‘probable cause’ thing so I flung open the doors and with as much good cheer as I could muster, said: “Help yourself”. They did. While one set of police searched my car with their torches, another lot clustered round me and asked me questions: “Where do you live? What are you doing here?” I’m a journalist and I live in a police state. What about you?
In my trouser pocket I found a “Medienhandbuch” from the G7, which I was given in my goodie bag when I was accredited there. By the light of a police searchlight, which was trained on me like I was trying to escape Stalag 17, I read out passages to my guards to pass the time. “Experienced staff from the Federal Government will be happy to help you with your work …” An officer interrupted. “Your address please.” It was on my driving licence in his hand. This was getting silly.
A little while later, bored and a bit cold, I decided to point out to the officers that while they were treating a journalist like a criminal, there were actual criminals about to arrive at the hotel they were guarding. Convicted criminals. Such as disgraced former CIA boss, David Petraeus, who’s just been handed a $100,000 (£64,000) fine and two years’ probation for leaking classified information.
Petraeus now works for the vulturous private equity firm KKR, run by Henry Kravis, who does arguably Bilderberg’s best impression of Gordon Gecko out of Wall Street. Which he cleverly combines with a pretty good impression of an actual gecko.
“What is a gecko?” asked one of my captors. “I’ll tell you what a gecko is if you tell me where the press accreditation centre is. What, there isn’t one? That’s a shame, because it would be really useful. You wouldn’t have to harass me in the middle of the night like this. I could just show you my press pass.” The policeman scribbled on his notebook. “Great, are you getting this down?” No. He was writing down the number on my driving licence. Again.

“Can I go now?” Another no. So I continued my list of criminals. I moved on to someone closer to home: René Benko, the Austrian real estate baron, who had a conviction for bribery upheld recently by the supreme court. Which didn’t stop him making the cut for this year’s conference. “You know Benko?” The cop nodded. It wasn’t easy to see in the glare of the searchlight, but he looked a little ashamed.
I reassured him that Benko’s crimes were in the very best traditions of Bilderberg. Don’t forget, the first chairman of the group, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, was the biggest fraudster of the lot; he was caught back in the 70s organising bribes from Lockheed and Northrop for the same arms contract. It was such a scandal that in 1976, Bilderberg had to skip a year out of sheer embarrassment.
Maybe they should think about giving this year a miss as well. I wouldn’t mind. I’m not having any fun here. “Do you mind turning off that searchlight? I won’t run away, I promise.” A stern head shook. The policemen were careful to keep officers on all sides of me. Like they’ve been trained to when faced with a slightly damp journalist wielding a G7 media handbook.
I decided to reward their vigilance with a chat about HSBC. The chairman of the troubled banking giant, Douglas Flint, is a regular attendee at Bilderberg, and he’s heading here again this year, along with a member of the bank’s board of directors, Rona Fairhead. Perhaps most tellingly, Flint is finding room in his Mercedes for the bank’s busiest employee: its chief legal officer, Stuart Levey.
A Guardian editorial this week branded HSBC “a bank beyond shame” after it announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs in the UK, while at the same time threatening to shift its headquarters to Hong Kong. And having just been forced to pay £28m in fines to Swiss regulators investigating money-laundering claims. The big question, of course, is how will the chancellor of the exchequer, George Osborne, respond to all this? Easy – he’ll go along to a luxury Austrian hotel and hole up with three senior members of HSBC in private. For three days.
High up on this year’s conference agenda is “current economic issues”, and without a doubt, one of the biggest economic issues for Osborne at the moment is the future and finances of Europe’s largest bank. Luckily, the chancellor will have plenty of time at Bilderberg to chat all this through through with Flint, Levey and Fairhead. And the senior Swiss financial affairs official, Pierre Maudet, a member of the Geneva state council in charge of the department of security and the economy. It’s all so incredibly convenient.
Yet it doesn’t sit easily with Osborne’s intention, which he trumpeted five years ago, shortly after taking office, “to implement the most radical transparency agenda the country has ever seen”. What he’s doing this week in Bavaria is about as transparent as an alp.
I’d got about as far as the 8,000 job cuts when I was finally allowed to go free. An utterly ridiculous 35-minute ID check. I would have been more furious but I was starting to get into the swing of my lecture. The searchlight was lowered and they waved me off into the night. “But wait, I haven’t even got as far as Henry Kissinger being questioned for war crimes …”
“Goodnight, sir.”

NWN:How many know the full name of the HSBC Bank ?  It stands for the Hong Kong and Shangai banking corporation. Formed during the time (1865) when Hong Kong was a major centre of corruption for the moving of opium and the Opium wars with China. It hasn't changed much has it ?

Tommy Williams and Dave Howard - The FONZ

Tommy Williams and Dave Howard

-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------

West Yorkshire Police were called today after Tommy Williams and Dave Howard turned up at 2.35pm on the Leeds doorstep of National Front Director of Information Eddy Morrison. Williams spoke while Howard stayed in the background filming. (We look forward to seeing if a video appears on Williams' blog.)

Eddy was at home with a NF comrade, three other members having left about half an hour ago. Tommy Williams knocked at the door and, when it was answered, said "Come outside, Eddy, and I'll do you." This was mingled with much swearing and more specific threats. Eddy and his comrade have informed the police that they saw either a knife or cosh in Williams' right hand. When Eddy and the other NF member attempted to shut the door, Williams stuck his foot in to prevent this. They only left when the NF member said he would call the police and Williams kicked the door as they departed. As they drove away, the NF members were able to take down the registration number of Howard's car, which has been supplied to the police.

When the police arrived, they were extremely concerned that such an incident had taken place in an old persons' residential complex and stayed for several hours. They took statements from Eddy and the comrade who was with him at the time, as well as other residents of the complex. They were also shown a threatening email sent by Williams a few days previously (see Eddy's blog), which shows a prior intent to intimidate and harm the recipient. When they were told about the many threats which have appeared on the Covert blog, they asked to see it and requested many printouts which they took away with them. The opinion of the police officers present was that the actions of Williams and Howard warranted, at the very least, a charge of threatening behaviour, and a file will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The police were also interested to learn that an elderly female NF member had been threatened and abused over the phone by a man with a South Yorkshire accent and will be speaking to her also.

National Front members are greatly angered by today's events and all of us regard an attack on a single member as an attack on the entire party.

NWN: No surprises here with these two thugs. However the links to Nick Griffin should be cause for concern to Griffinite BNP people.

Breaking News
The Covert Blog has been closed (not shut down).
Presumably the owners want to hide some of the more incriminating stuff from the police while the investigation is under way.

NWN: We have lifted this old post from the vaults. Seems these two shitbags are still around spreading their poison . Thankfully most now realise the part they played in destroying the BNP. They still post apparently on the Democracy forum using the name - THE FONZ.

Williams was also found out to have been working for Channel 4 for AntiFa and living in Milwaukee ! Plays for some rubbish band as well.

It is also significant that 'they' use the 'nom de guerre of 'The Fonz'. The Fonz is/was a communist jew, whose real name is Henry Winkler !

At one time they were both paid by the crook Nick Griffin to act as his attack dogs and to push dirty propaganda- just like the zionists.

They helped Griffin destroy the BNP, and they knew exactly what they were doing.

This pair went off to do their bit for the EDL. And we all know where they ended up!
