Breaking News: Elected mayor Mark Meredith arrested in corruption probe

ELECTED mayor Mark Meredith was today arrested in connection with the police inquiry into alleged corruption at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

He was picked up by detectives from Staffordshire Police's major investigations department this morning.

His arrest comes exactly a week after Tory councillor Roger Ibbs was arrested on suspicion of corruption in public office.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said today that a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and complicity in corruption in public office.

He has been taken to an unnamed police station in the county for questioning.

BRITONS' OLYMPIC JOB SNUB

MORE than 10,000 National Insurance numbers have been issued to foreigners in London’s Olympic borough in the last six months, it was revealed yesterday.

The number of overseas workers seeking jobs in Newham, centrepiece of the 2012 Olympics, is higher than for any other area in Britain, and rising.The influx, despite the recession, will intensify questions of just how many of the jobs created in preparing for the Olympics are going to local workers.

Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green said: “It looks like the Government have failed to train enough construction workers in the area to compete for the jobs we need to build the Olympic stadium.

What a commentary on how they have let Londoners down.”The statistics, from the Department for Work and Pensions, show that in the six months between April and September last year, 10,680 National Insurance numbers were issued to foreign citizens in Newham. More than a third were from eastern Europe, although the biggest single group was from India – nearly 1,800 of the total.

Phil Woolas 'should resign over ONS attack'

Immigration minister Phil Woolas has faced calls to resign after launching a bitter attack on the Office for National Statistics.

Statistics experts were yesterday forced to defend the ONS after Mr Woolas accused the independent body of helping stoke xenophobia with the "sinister" release of immigration data.

Sir Michael Scholar, head of the UK Statistics Authority, hit back at the minister, saying that the ONS was being "pilloried" for publishing objective information.

Amid a growing backlash against the Government's recent attacks on the national body charged with compiling and distributing impartial data, senior opposition figures called for Mr Woolas to withdraw his comments or resign.

Michael Fallon MP, a former chairman of the Commons statistics panel, said that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith should sack her minister if he refused to withdraw his comments.

"It's disgraceful, undermining the ONS. You can't have ministers attacking its independence," he told the Daily Mail.

Ministers 'fizzing' over early release of immigration data

It is meant to be an independent body charged with publishing number sets and statistical analyses of trends. But the Office for National Statistics has found itself accused of "playing politics".

The Government said yesterday the ONS was "at best naïve or at worst sinister" after it released figures about foreign nationals living in Britain.
The Immigration minister Phil Woolas said the ONS had brought forward the release of figures showing the number of British-born workers had fallen while the number of foreign-born staff had grown.

He said departing from the scheduled publication date because the information was topical meant the ONS had used "political" reasoning.
The UK Statistics Authority, which oversees the ONS, said it would not be "pilloried" for releasing figures. Opposition MPs said the Government was more concerned with ensuring that figures told a good story rather than addressing problems with immigration.

Society damaged by Labour's politically correct policies on multiculturalism

Society is being damaged by Labour's politically correct policy of multiculturalism and the fear of causing offence, according to a Dominic Grieve.

Mr Grieve, the Shadow Justice Secretary, claims the regulation of private opinions and public debate have left people unable to say what they think is right or wrong.

He believes Britain is suffering an "identity breakdown" after a decade in which the Government has destroyed respect for the country's history and culture.

And he warns that the failure to discuss multiculturalism by mainstream political groups has been exploited by the far-right British National Party, which is now taking council seats across the country.

His comments come a week after Hazel Blears, the Communities Secretary, said people must be free to discuss contentious issues without fear of "over-reaction".

But speaking at the Lord Smith of Clifton Lecture at Queen Mary, University of London, Mr Grieve said: "In fact if she is serious, she is heralding a U-turn on 12 years of Labour policy.

"A decade of ranking people as members of neatly categorised ethnic, religious or social groups, rather than treating everyone as an individual in their own right."

Nationalists use POLISH plane in campaign poster despite plans to ban East European migrants

British National Party bosses were ridiculed on Tuesday after fronting a campaign which includes banning Eastern European immigrants - with a Polish squadron Spitfire.
The party's 2009 European Elections poster shows a nostalgic picture of a Second World War spitfire under the slogan 'Battle for Britain'.

But RAF history experts have identified the iconic Romeo Foxtrot Delta plane as belonging not to Brits but to a group of Polish pilots instead.
