Today’s Sunday Times front page exposes a property tycoon with a personal fortune of more than £400m; a man who boasts of his friendships with the Royal Family as well as late IRA godfather Martin McGuinness; a man who has given almost £300,000 to Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party; yet a man whose flagship London property is packed with prostitutes and has been described as “Sodom and Gomorrah” and the “infamous 10 floors of whores”.
Christopher Moran likes to describe himself as “Dr Christopher Moran” on the basis of an honorary degree from the University of Ulster, though his formal education ended when he left Owen’s Grammar School in Islington with a few ‘O’ levels in 1964.

He is a 70 year old businessman whose family home is Crosby Hall, an historic mansion on Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, that was once the City home of Tudor courtier Sir Thomas More, executed by Henry VIII in 1535, but was moved stone by stone to its present riverside location in 1910. Mr Moran is not short of hubris. As part of his controversial £50m restoration of Crosby Hall he had his own initials ‘CJM’ carved in stone together with his pretentious Latin motto Meritum, Pertinacia, Fortitudo et Fideli (Merit, Determination, Courage & Loyalty).
Moran also has a 48,000 acre estate in the Scottish Highlands.
Just a mile from Moran’s mansion is Chelsea Cloisters, a block of 670 apartments on Sloane Avenue owned by Moran’s company Realreed. In addition to the freehold on the entire block, Moran owns the lease on more than 200 of the apartments. Sunday Times journalists investigating Moran made 40 bookings in recent weeks with prostitutes using 23 apartments in Chelsea Cloisters, 15 of which are rented directly from Moran’s company.

Realreed Limited is entirely controlled by the Moran family: H&D has established that its three directors are Christopher Moran and his twin sons, 30-year-old Jamie and Charles. The twins’ mother (former Miss Thames Television, Helen Taylor) is not involved – she ran off to the South of France with local flower seller Andrew Maple in 1998 and has since been quoted as describing her former husband thus: “He doesn’t say things in jest – ever. When he wants something he will stop at nothing to get it. He wants people to remember what he has achieved and he’s very persuasive – quite ruthless, really.”
One ‘escort agency’ claims to have 100 prostitutes working at Chelsea Cloisters on any single night. Many seem to have been trafficked to London from Romania, and the Sunday Times has handed a dossier of evidence to the head of Scotland Yard’s anti-trafficking unit. Former anti-slavery commissioner Kevin Hyland confirmed to the newspaper that there had been “previous cases of [suspected] trafficking linked to Chelsea Cloisters”. One such scandal was publicised in 2004 by the London Evening Standard.
Gavin Shuker MP, chairman of a recent parliamentary investigation into the sex trade, said that the Sunday Times findings suggested Chelsea Cloisters could be Britain’s “biggest brothel”. Mr Shuker demanded that the Conservative Party, which has benefited from almost £300,000 in donations from Christopher Moran and his company, should hand the money to “charities that assist victims of human trafficking”.

Last year in an article on his own website Christopher Moran referred to his personal “friend and champion of peace, Martin McGuinness”. Via the charity Moran chairs (Co-operation Ireland) he brokered several meetings between infamous IRA godfather McGuinness and the British establishment. According to the Irish broadcaster RTE, Moran “stage managed” the historic handshake between McGuinness and the Queen in 2012, and in November 2016 hosted an event at Crosby Hall again attended by the Queen and (in one of his final public appearances) McGuinness.
RTE also reported Moran’s claim that former Prime Minister Tony Blair has used Crosby Hall as part of his shadowy business career since leaving Downing St, though the tycoon has always had closer relations with the Tories, including masterminding the £30m sale of Conservative Central Office in Smith Square. According to a report in 2006 by the Independent on Sunday, Moran was one of a group of tycoons who secretly lent a total of £5m to the cash-strapped Tories, who had to pay back the money in 2006 to avoid being forced by the Electoral Commission to publish details.
Moran’s many other high-level establishment connections include his position as Vice-President (and former Vice-Chairman) of the Council of Christians and Jews.

H&D is aware of numerous previous controversies that marred but failed to halt Christopher Moran’s meteoric rise to business prominence. He began building his empire in the late 1960s, starting as a clerk, then founding insurance brokers Christopher Moran & Co., obtaining approval to conduct business at Lloyd’s of London in the summer of 1972 when Moran was just 24.
A year later Moran paid more than £1m to acquire a Lloyd’s underwriting agency, and in 1976 he obtained a Stock Exchange listing through an £8m ‘reverse takeover’ of existing company Richardson Smith.
In the late 1970s Moran’s company was one of several big names investigated by City of London Police for alleged breaches of exchange control regulations. These ended without charges, but Moran lost a libel suit against the Daily Telegraph in the summer of 1980.

A few weeks after his failed libel action, Moran’s rapid ascent was stymied on August 1st 1980 when he was arrested and charged with conspiracy to defraud. At a bizarre meeting on October 31st 1980 in a Savoy Hotel function room, the entire board of Moran’s company quit after failing to force his resignation – but in December after a month-long trial an Old Bailey judge instructed a jury to find Moran not guilty.
Nevertheless in September 1982 the Committee of Lloyd’s found him guilty of “acts and defaults discreditable to him in connection with the business of insurance” and he became the first man in the 300-year history of Lloyd’s to be expelled from membership. According to independent arbitrator Andrew Leggatt appointed to assess the case, Moran was a man who “worshipped Mammon”.
Moran never succeeded in winning readmission to Lloyd’s after this life ban, but his fortune continued to expand despite further legal troubles, this time across the Atlantic, in 1992 when he was fined more than £1m by a US Federal court over an insider dealing case brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Will Moran’s teflon coating survive the latest charges by the Sunday Times? The newspaper has been careful to assert that there is “no suggestion that Moran has any involvement with the prostitution” apparently rampant throughout his Chelsea property, and similarly H&D is not aware of any such involvement, but there are bound to be questions not only as to whether the Conservative Party should hold on to his donations, but about (for example) the position of Sir Malcolm McKibbin, recently retired head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, as a board member of Moran’s charity Co-operation Ireland – and for that matter the charity’s joint patrons, HM The Queen and Irish President Michael Higgins.
Loyal friends of Ulster will no doubt be grateful for the courage of Sunday Times reporters who pursued this investigation, and will surely give their full support by all means necessary if those reporters continue to suffer threats, as reported in today’s newspaper.

The pregnant Duchess of Sussex today made an emotional return visit to a community kitchen which inspired her collaborative work on a Grenfell Tower charity cookbook, telling the women: 'I'm so proud of you.'

Meghan went to the Hubb Community Kitchen, not far from the site of the deadly tower block blaze in West London, to see first hand the progress made since the Together cookbook went on sale in September.

The mother-to-be was greeted warmly by kitchen co-ordinator Zaheera Sufyaan - whom she gave a big hug - and Abdurahman Sayed, chief executive of the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Centre in North Kensington.

Meghan, who has been making private visits to the kitchen since January, quickly abandoned any formality when she got inside. She threw her arms around each of the women and kissed them, chattering excitedly about what they had been up to since she last saw them. 'Hi, how are you? Wow, it's so quiet in here,' she said, giggling.

Wearing a burgundy dress and coat by Club Monaco, a Canadian company now owned by US fashion giant Polo Ralph Lauren, Meghan soon put on an apron, rolled up her sleeves and got stuck into helping prepare food.

She said to a group of women: 'It starts from one idea and from this one idea starts so much. I'm so proud of you.' 

The book - full title Together: Our Community Cookbook - took the number one spot on Amazon within hours of being unveiled two months ago and has since sold nearly 40,000 copies in the UK, raising £210,000.

Lord Lester’s suspension, until June 2022, would be the longest since the second world war.A Liberal Democrat peer has been suspended from the House of Lords for almost four years after a committee found he tried to pressure a woman into having sex with him by promising to make her a baroness, threatening repercussions if she refused.Anthony Lester, a human rights barrister and former government adviser who has been a peer since 1993, will be suspended until June 2022, the privileges and conduct committee said.If the Lords upholds the punishment, it would be the longest suspension handed to either a peer or an MP since the second world war.A report from the committee, published on Monday, found Lord Lester, 82, told the unnamed complainant, who is described as an expert in her field: “If you sleep with me, I will make you a baroness within a year.”

The woman told the inquiry that Lester, who has been suspended from the Lib Dems and resigned the party whip earlier this year, said if she refused, “he would see to it I never had a seat in the House of Lords, and warned me there would be other repercussions for me”.
She also said after she turned him down, he stopped inviting her to relevant meetings. The behaviour amounted to “a grave abuse of power in the performance of his parliamentary duties”, the committee said.
Following an original investigation by Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, the upper house’s commissioner for standards, the subcommittee on lords’ conduct recommended Lester be expelled, the first time such action would have been taken.
However, Lester appealed, and while separate privileges and conduct committee upheld the conclusion, it opted for a punishment of suspension, as the rule allowing expulsion was introduced in 2015, after the offence, which took place 12 years ago.
The suspension was imposed due to sexual harassment and “corrupt inducements” by Lester, the committee said.
Scott-Moncrieff’s report into the claims, first made by the woman in November 2017, concluded that on the balance of probabilities they were credible.
The complainant said the harassment began after she attended a meeting at the Lords and had missed her evening train. Lester suggested she stay at his London home, and that his wife would be there.
When driving her to his home, she said “he kept repeatedly missing the gear stick with his hand and instead very firmly placed his hand on my right thigh”, behaviour she objected to.
After he made more suggestive remarks, she slept with her bedroom door barred with a chair, calling a friend to describe her worries. The next morning, when his wife had left, the woman said Lester put his arms round her waist and chased her around the kitchen.
It was at a later meeting at the Lords, she said, that Lester made the offer, the woman said, offering to make her a peer.
She told the inquiry: “He even spelled it out, putting my surname in, and asked me how that sounded. I responded immediately without hesitation by saying that if I were ever to become a member of the House of Lords, it had to be purely on merit.”
The report said the woman provided six witnesses, among them a judge, who were able to say she described the events happening immediately after they took place. One of them was the friend she phoned from Lester’s house.
The peer provided four of his own witnesses, among them his wife, who said they had never seen Lester acting inappropriately.
On Lester, the committee report said: “The tragic irony of this case is that for decades past the respondent has been one of the most widely known, effective and admired of those campaigning for racial and sexual equality in this country, a renowned supporter of human rights and freedoms across the board.”
In a statement released after the suspension was announced Lester maintained that the allegations were “completely untrue”, saying he had produced evidence that demonstrated this was the case.
He added: “There has to be a fair process for investigating sexual harassment claims in parliament. Parliament is supposed to be a bastion of the rule of law but has ignored calls to reform this procedure properly for 20 years. I hope to be judged by my work over decades for gender equality, race relations and free speech.”

Early life and education

Lester was born into a Jewish family^[2] and was educated at the City of London School. He then studied history and law at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Harvard Law School, graduating with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Laws degrees respectively.^[3]

Legal career

Lester was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1963^[3] and took silk in 1975.^[4] In 1987, he was appointed to be a recorder^[5][6][7] and was in office until 1993.^[3] As a barrister he works from Blackstone Chambers. He was appointed adjunct professor of the Faculty of Law at University College Cork in 2005.

Race relations

In the 1960s and 1970s Lester was directly involved with the drafting of race relations legislation in Britain. During these periods, he acted as the chair of the legal subcommittee of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination (C.A.R.D.) and was a member of several organisations working for racial equality such as the Society of Labour Lawyers, Fabian Society, Council of the Institute of Race Relations, British Overseas Socialist Fellowship and the National Committee for Commonwealth Immigrants.^[8] In 1968, he co-founded the Runnymede Trust think-tank with Jim Rose. He was chairman of the Runnymede Trust from 1991 to 1993. 
Eliot Joseph Benn "Jim" Rose (7 June 1909 – 21 May 1999) was a British intelligence officer, journalist and campaigner.
Born into an "elite" Jewish family, Rose was educated at Rugby School and New College, Oxford.^[1]

Special adviser

He was a special adviser to Roy Jenkins at the Home Office in the 1970s, and moved with Jenkins from the Labour Party to found the SDP in 1981. On 29 June 2007, Lester was appointed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a special adviser on constitutional reform to the Secretary of State for Justice.^[9] Lester is a member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

I became involved with human rights while at Cambridge in the late 50s as part of the struggle against Apartheid, and then at Harvard Law School in the early 60s and in the Deep South during the long hot summer of 1964 (writing a book for Amnesty International).

I became actively involved in the UK when called to the Bar in 1964. I helped set up CARD (the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination) and was legal adviser on the lobby for effective legislation to tackle that social evil. I am still campaigning for effective equality legislation.

The lives of three gangster brothers who claimed to 'rule Manchester' will come under the spotlight in a a new TV documentary.
For a period the Noonan clan were at very top of the criminal tree in the city.
They found notoriety and made a fortune, firstly by specialising in armed robbery.
But, brothers Damien, Desmond, and Dominic were astute enough to recognise an easier way to net vast amounts of cash.
They took over the doors of the city's nightclubs - and so controlled who had access to sell drugs in them.
Manchester dance venue, The Hacienda, a former warehouse on Whitworth Street, would become their golden goose.
Running the doors and taking a cut from drugs profits there meant they were making up to £50,000 a night, according to a new documentary to be screened tomorrow evening.

Irish Republican, anti-fascist, with a bear-like physique, Dessie Noonan was key to helping the brothers monopolise the supply of bouncers at the club and others in the city.
But it was Damien, described by journalist Donal MacIntyre as 'the UN peace keeper in gangland Manchester' who was the level-headed but powerful leader of the family. Damien was a canny operator, cementing loyalties by making donations to different causes in his community.
With Damien's death, in 2004, came the beginning of the end of the brothers' underworld dominance.
The programme which charts their rise and fall - 'Manchester's Narco Kings: Blood & Fear,' will be screened on Channel 5 at 10pm on Monday.
It tracks the very beginnings of the Noonans - a family with 14 children, raised in tough poverty.

As Manchester emerged from the gloom of economic depression, the drugs that became synonymous with the city's emergent nightlife presented an opportunity the Noonans were not going to miss.

A murder - in February 1991 - almost ended their empire.
Flamboyant 'White Tony' Johnson - a leader of the Cheetham Hill Gang, who drove a white Ford Sierra Cosworth, was shot dead on the car park of the Penny Black pub.
Dessie went on trial for his murder. The first trial collapsed amid rumours of jury tampering and at the second Dessie was acquitted.
It had been alleged that Johnson was killed after a fall out over how £350,000, the proceeds from a robbery, were divided up.
With Johnson gone the Noonans position was strengthened and they expanded their operations to other cities despite increased police surveillance of their activities.

Dominic called at the rival gang's local pub and used a machete to decapitate one of their dogs that was outside.

On his colossal black and gold headstone the family inscribed: "Our family chain is broken/Nothing seems the same."
Then having been consumed by an out-of-control alcohol and crack cocaine habit Dessie was stabbed to death by a crack dealer in Chorlton in March 2005.
Drug dealer Derek McDuffus, known as Yardie Derek, had refused to sell drugs to Dessie. Days later, GMP failed in a bid to stop the screening of documentary of the Noonans, by MacIntyre, in which he grinned as he alluded to be being behind a spate of gangland killings.
Dessie's funeral had all the pomp of a gangland 'don' but it was almost a last hurrah of their power.

Bare-knuckle boxer and TV personality, Paddy Doherty, a friend of Damien's tells the programme: "The minute (Damien) died they weren't half as powerful as they thought they were. He was the gangster of gangsters in Greater Manchester."
Worse was to follow. Dominic was hit badly by the deaths, and according to McIntyre was 'a man at sea.'
He was also harbouring dark secret which had been hidden while his brothers had been alive. For decades Dominic had been suspected of being a predatory sex offender by the police, fellow villains, and even, it is said, members of his own family.
With his brothers gone he was no longer the force he was. But for years he was still able, exert influence and command loyalty in inner city areas, and he became a street provocateur - relishing playing cat and mouse with the authorities. For well over a decade after his brothers' deaths, he still had enough of a reputation to be confident that the rumours that he abused boys would never come to anything.
But, says the programme, with time he became 'so weak, he couldn't hold back the dam of allegations'.
