Two activists from France’s far-right National Front have been expelled for putting laxative in wine served to Louis Aliot, a deputy leader and domestic partner of Marine Le Pen, the party chief.
Jean-David Eyquem, a former youth leader for the Front in the Bordeaux area, and Jean-Baptiste Defrance, a former local council candidate, were excluded permanently from the populist movement for allegedly attempting to sabotage a press conference by Mr Aliot because of a dispute in the party over gay marriage, officials confirmed today.

Lenny Henry received mixed reviews when he guest edited BBC Radio 4's Today Programme

Lenny Henry's guest editing of the BBC's flagship daily radio news programme received a mix reaction. 

The actor and comedian took over Tuesday's edition of Radio 4's Today Programme to discuss ethnic diversity in the media.

For the show the presenting team was made up entirely of people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

It also featured interviews with MP Diane Abbott, Culture Secretary Sajid Javid, and MEP Amjad Bashir. 

While some people supported the programme calling it 'refreshing' others criticised it for not being diverse enough.

Broadcaster Jeremy Vine was quick to come out in support of the show calling it 'thought-provoking.'

Bethany Skinnard tweeted: 'Really enjoyed your guest edit@LennyHenry on @BBCRadio4 #todayshow really refreshing perspective and let's not forget # devilsavocado' 

However, others described the decision to exclude white presenters as 'positive race discrimination' and described Henry as a 'hypocrite.'

During the show Henry revealed that he had been the victim of racism his 'whole life.' 

He said that included during the programme and after he made earlier in the year to BAFTA about the lack of black and ethnic minority people on screen.

'I'm very aware there's still a way to go,' he said.

'But what's great is there's a tolerance in this country that is extraordinary and to be proud of and I'm proud to be British and my mum was proud to be British too.'

'The Election' was crowdfunded through Kickstarter and received backing from representatives of the three main political parties

Widespread disillusionment with politics among young voters has triggered a rush by the main parties to consider reducing the voting age to 16. But one author has gone one further step in trying to engage the young – by writing what is thought to be the first children's book in the UK on general elections.

With 7 May just over four months away, The Election, a picture book aimed at young children, tells the story of a boy named Alex who asks his parents about politics and voting. Ellie Levenson, a journalist and author, got the idea for the book after her own daughter started asking questions when the family went to a polling station during this year's local elections.
The story follows preschooler Alex and his parents, who canvass for the stripy party, and Evie and her parents, who are supporters of the spotty party. Door-knocking, voting, television debates and results night are all explained alongside colourful illustrations by Marek Jagucki.
Ms Levenson said: "I wanted to normalise voting and participation from a young age so that children don't grow up as thinking of politics as something other people do, but as something that everyone does.
"Children are inherently interested in how their society works and ask pertinent questions all the time. When a child asks why another child doesn't have as many toys as they do, the answers are political even if you're not using terms like 'inequality' or 'public service cuts' in your answers, and this books tries to give that a bit of context. I grew up with politics being part of everyday conversation, and I've no doubt that's why I ended up working for a think tank and then as a journalist."
The book was crowdfunded through Kickstarter and received backing from representatives of the three main political parties including Labour councillors, a Tory MP and a Liberal Democrat peer. The book is the first from Fisherton Press, a new publishing company set up by Ms Levenson, who has titles by other authors lined up.
Ms Levenson added: "It was really important in The Election for the parties not to be recognisable as any real parties because it's about process rather than policy. So there's the spotty party and the stripy party.
"The main moral of the story is tolerance – only one party wins, and you'll have to read the book to find out which – but the children remain friends anyway. I'll consider the book a success if the general election in 2030 has a high turnout as a result of the young children who read the book now coming of age."
'The Election' is published on 5 January and is online from today.

7,500 Germans Gather to Sing Christmas Carols Against Islamisation

The German PEGIDA movement held its largest meeting yet last night to protest what they call the ‘Islamisation of the Western World’, despite stiff opposition from all sections of Germany’s elite including politicians, media, and the arts.

PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans Against Islamisation of the West) has grown rapidly since its inception in October, a peaceful ‘strolling’ movement opposing the exceptional violence seen in street battles between Salafist Muslims and ethnic Kurds seen in many German cities this year and enormous immigration. Now on it’s tenth ‘evening stroll’, it has grown from a couple of hundred people, to 15,000 last week, to more than 17,500 last night.
In addition to the hundreds of banners with slogans such as ‘Against Hatred, Violence, and the Quran’, ‘Against Religious Fanaticism’, and ‘No Sharia in Europe’, the thousands attending brought song sheets which had been distributed online and sang favourite Christmas carols.
Despite the essentially ordinary character of many of the people taking to the streets for the peaceful strolls, and the admission by senior government and police figures that a great many of those joining in are families bringing their children, the organisation has come in for stiff criticism and rejection by the heights of the German elite.
Chancellor Merkel has suggested the leadership of PEGIDA have an ulterior motive, despite their focus on non-violent protest and apolitical principles. She even went as far to warn people thinking of going on the weekly stroll to “watch out that they are not instrumentalised by the organisers”. The SPD, Germany’s Labour-party equivalent have gone as far as calling PEGIDA “Nazis in pinstripes”.
This is despite a report by the German police that there are significantly more known troublemakers in the counter-protest movements, than in PEGIDA itself.
It is not only German politics which is putting its weight behind the counter-PEGIDA movement. Apparently dismayed that 17,500 people had turned out in bad weather to sing Christian carols, the Protestant Bishop of Dresden said PEGIDA were trying “to exploit a Christian symbol and a Christian tradition” for political ends.
Germany’s art elite also showed their disapproval last night. The directors of Dresden’s Bavarian State Opera house, outside which the protests take place turned off the lights on the building, cloaking it in darkness during the stroll. Colossal 50-foot banners were draped in front of the building reading “humanity, respect, and diversity”.
No plans have yet been announced by PEGIDA for their next march.

Portadown: Device 'found under soldier's car'

The police and bomb disposal officers were called to the alert outside Portadown

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a device found under a soldier's car in Portadown, County Armagh.

It is understood the booby trap bomb was discovered under a serving soldier's vehicle at Corbracky Road.
Upper Bann MP David Simpson said it was his understanding that the Army officer found the device earlier on Friday and that she phoned police.
Bomb disposal officers were called to scene and a number of houses have been evacuated.
'Serious situation' The bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on the device at about 16:45 GMT.
Mr Simpson, who is a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), said it was a "very serious situation".

The serving soldier discovered the device under her car on the Corbracky Road, a rural area outside the town

"We have to pay tribute to the diligence of the individual who discovered it.
"Today we could have been looking at a fatality, but the diligence was there and this device was discovered," the MP told the BBC's Evening Extra programme.
'Worrying development' Mr Simpson said he believed dissident republicans were responsible for the attack but added that this had not yet been confirmed by the security forces.
Justice Minister David Ford said it was a "worrying development".
"It shows the value of vigilance on the part of this individual officer. It shows the need for vigilance, but I'm absolutely delighted that clearly vigilance has paid off."
Mr Ford also praised the actions of the bomb disposal team.
'Evil act' Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd condemned the attack and said those responsible "do not speak for the local community and are not advancing any cause".
SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly said: "This was an evil act against an individual and those who carried it out have no regard for the safety of the wider public through their wanton recklessness for the lives of many."
The alert is continuing. Part of Corbracky Road has been closed to traffic and diversions are in place.

Two men have been charged after Operation Retriever officers raided a factory in Rochdale.

Mohamad Iqbal (born 23/08/1963) of Belmont Way, Rochdale, and Najum Mohammed Iqbal (born 28/12/1973) of Harrison Close, Rochdale have both been charged under Section 71(b) of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 – “to knowingly require another person to perform forced or compulsory labour”.

Both men have been remanded in custody and will appear before Bury and Rochdale Magistrates Court on Thursday 18 December 2014.

Three men have been bailed pending further enquiries.

And now slavery in Rochdale......Three men arrested for enslavement and trafficking offences

Three men have been arrested for enslavement and trafficking offences as Greater Manchester Police’s joint operation with Rochdale Council, Operation Retriever, entered its second phase.

This morning, Monday 15 December 2014, GMP officers, alongside partner agency teams from Rochdale Council, the Home Office and HMRC, executed a warrant at a factory on Ings Lane, Rochdale.

As a result of these warrants three men, aged 51, 43 and 40 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to require another person to perform forced or compulsory labour and conspiracy to commit trafficking offences.

A 24-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

Today’s action follows the Operation’s initial success in November, when 15 people across Greater Manchester were arrested and five charged for their involvement in a trafficking ring which sold a pregnant woman into a sham marriage and attempted to trick her into aborting her baby.

Intelligence gathered during phase one led officers from both GMP and the council to an address in Rochdale.

When they searched the property, they found 10 Eastern European immigrants living in terrible conditions, with up to three or four sleeping in each room.

A further investigation revealed that these men and women were being taken to work in a factory in Rochdale each day, where they were paid less than two pound per hour for working more than 80 hours per week.

Today’s raids upon that factory revealed a workforce of 20 Eastern European immigrants, who have now been rescued from a life of physical and verbal abuse, 80-hour weeks and terrible living conditions enforced by the men who owned and ran the factory.

Detective Inspector James Faulkner of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division, said: “This is another excellent result from a joint operation which has strived to uncover and protect vulnerable victims from the men and women hoping to exploit them for their own financial gain.

“The men and women working in the factory have told us that they were subjected to physical and verbal assaults at the hands of their employers and forced to work more than 80-hours before ending up with around £25 for their week’s work.

“This is a typical example of how modern slavery can work in the UK.

“The men and women are promised accommodation and jobs, but are forced to live in cramped, terrible conditions before being taken to work in a factory for more than 12 hours each day.

“At the end of the week, the factory owners pay them around £125 for their 80 hours, but then take up to £100 away immediately for rent, travel and other expenses.
“This leaves the men and women effectively working for pennies, while simultaneously ensuring they remain reliant on the people enslaving them.

“When you consider that this factory was producing frames and pictures for major high street companies, with contracts running into the millions of pounds, it proves just how much money these men stood to make from this exploitation.

“Now GMP and our partners in Rochdale Council will be striving to safeguard these victims from further exploitation, and will do our utmost to ensure that the people responsible for this injustice are punished to the full extent of the law.”

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment with Rochdale Borough Council said: "Today’s raid is another example of agencies working together to share, connect and act on information, quickly and effectively.

“Through truly ground breaking initiatives like PET, the Partnership Enforcement Team, we use all our tools and powers, be it through housing, revenues and benefits or trading standards to disrupt criminality in the Borough.

"We want to send a clear message that Rochdale Council and the Police are committed to rooting out criminal behaviour, bringing the perpetrators to justice and helping victims.”

More asylum seekers in Rochdale than the entire South East of England

It has emerged that there are more asylum seekers being placed in Rochdale than in the whole of the South East region.

Home Office figures have shown there are currently 615 asylum seekers in Rochdale compared with 447 in the entire South East of England, which includes just one in Windsor and Maidenhead where the Home Secretary, Theresa May, is the MP.

In David Cameron’s backyard of West Oxfordshire there are no asylum seekers at all.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has challenged the Government to address the disproportionate number of asylum seekers being placed in Rochdale.

Mr Danczuk said: “I think we can be proud as a country that we offer asylum to people who need it, but we need to make sure the burden is spread fairly across the country. And we need to make sure that the system is fair - I meet too many people in my surgery that are economic migrants trying to claim asylum. The system at the moment is a shambles and ministers need to explain why David Cameron’s constituency takes no asylum seekers and a wildly disproportionate number are placed in Rochdale. This is bad policy and runs the risk of not only putting extra strain on community relations but also putting significant pressure on services that are already struggling due to Government cuts.”
