Al-Jazeera: Tests suggest Arafat died of polonium poisoning

Recent tests conducted on Yasser Arafat's personal belongings at the time of his unexpected death in 2004 suggest his body contained abnormal levels of radioactive polonium, the same poisonous substance that killed Russian spy-turned-dissident Alexander Litvinenko, Al-Jazeera TV reports.Al-Jazeera says its nine-month investigation found that Arafat was in good health until he fell suddenly ill Oct. 12, 2004, at his compound in Ramallah on the West Bank. He was flown to a French miitary hospital in Paris, where he died several days later.

No autopsy was performed on the longtime Palestinian leader, who died at the age of 74.
Al-Jazeera says the tests on his clothes, including his toothbrush and kaffiyeh, were conducted by the Institut de Radiophysique in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"I can confirm to you that we measured an unexplained, elevated amount of unsupported polonium-210 in the belongings of Mr. Arafat that contained stains of biological fluids," Francois Bochud, the director of the institute, tells Al-Jazeera.
Additional tests, conducted over a three-month period from March until June, concluded that most of that polonium found in samples of body fluids -- sweat and urine -- on Arafat's clothes, was "unsupported," meaning that it did not come from natural sources.
Al-Jazeera says there is little scientific consensus on the symptoms of polonium poisoning, mostly because it is so rare.
Litvinenko suffered severe diarrhea, weight loss and vomiting, as did Arafat, in the days and weeks before he fell ill.
A British inquiry into the Litvinenko's death found that he was poisoned with polonium slipped into his tea at a sushi restaurant, Al-Jazeera notes.

On the reverse of this page is a report about my condition today and in the past. Apparently, the Italian authorities have no misgivings holding an almost 97-year-old man under arrest even though he is totally innocent.

Dear friends around the world,

Once again I experienced the joy of hundreds of letters and greeting cards - I know I am not forgotten, and the greetings and good wishes of all of these people of good will, always give me the moral strength to endure this long ordeal undaunted. For that I thank you all from the heart!

The year brought me some minor health problems which the military doctors at the hospital were able to sort out very well. The great respect which is evident from all of you gives me pleasure.

From the judiciary, I cannot announce anything positive at all. The judges responsible for my prison sentence are not inclined to be heroes, that is, to take action against my persecutors, and therefore the efforts of my friend and guardian angel, my lawyer Dr. P. Giachini, have so far been without result - that is, all things remain as they previously were:

"A 96-year-old German national, who as a German soldier in a cruel war had to obey orders from above – is detained here since 1995 although in 1948 his colleagues were acquitted of all guilt in the Kappler proceedings by an Italian military court in Rome. This acquittal was for all and after that the Roman military court has never again indicted or prosecuted a member of our command (after the war I twice visited Italy).

All of you know who my persecutors are. So it is not surprising that official Germany doesn’t stir a finger for me. An old German national abroad in distress. So far my German friends have asked three Federal Presidents of Germany to help. In a response, not in accordance with the truth German, citizens have been informed that Priebke was "legally convicted" even though I was acquitted by three Italian judges in the name of the Italian Constitution in the first trial. A malicious distortion of facts.

In May 2010, it will be 16 years that I am a prisoner. The only measure which my judges could bring themselves to take was to send a medical officer to me to the house where I am held, although all medical records were also always sent to them providing information about my health. - Personally, I hold the view - whether healthy or ill, to hold a 96-year-old man under arrest is an absolute disgrace for a civilized nation such as Italy professes to be!

For those who do not know: I am now a six-fold great grandfather - 2 girls in the U.S., a boy and a girl in Argentina and two boys in Germany - Thank God, the clan is not dying out.

And so I’ll close for today. - My cordial greetings to you all, my thanks for your support and your friendship and solidarity. The great philosopher Balthasar Graciàn (born 1601) once said, he who has found a good friend has found a treasure – thus, I am now a rich man!

The ringleader of a gang of Asian men who groomed young white girls for sex can finally be unmasked after he was found guilty of 30 child rape charges.
Shabir Ahmed, 59, led a child sex exploitation ring of nine men who targeted vulnerable young girls in the Rochdale and Oldham areas of Greater Manchester.
He was jailed for 19 years last month following an 11-week trial at Liverpool Crown Court.
But Ahmed - known to his victims by the nickname 'Daddy' - could not be named as he was awaiting trial on separate child rape charges.
Today he was convicted of 30 charges of rape by a jury at Manchester Crown Court and Judge Mushtaq Khokhar lifted reporting restrictions, which means he can be identified for the first time.
The court heard that he raped and sexually abused a young Asian girl over many years.
He treated her as a 'possession' which he used for his own sexual gratification, the court was told.

Ahmed, formerly of Oldham, wearing a black Lonsdale tracksuit top, smirked as the jury returned the unanimous verdicts.
Judge Gerald Clifton, who sentenced Ahmed in Liverpool, said the gang treated their victims 'as though they were worthless and beyond any respect'.

 

Ahmed was violent and dominated his victim, a jury of six men and six women was told in his latest trial.
Rachel Smith, opening the case for the prosecution, said Ahmed repeatedly raped the victim for more than a decade.

Miss Smith said: 'She tried to make him stop, but it was to no avail.'
She said the victim was eventually forced to submit to him and the abuse happened on an almost weekly basis.
'The defendant was a violent and controlling man,' said Miss Smith, adding that he dominated his victim and would subject her to extreme violence.

She added: 'The defendant treated (her) as some sort of possession to be used for his own sexual gratification, as and when he chose.'
The jury was told that the victim felt a sense of shame about what happened to her, which stopped her reporting it to the police for many years.
Miss Smith said: 'The reality of what he had done to her was never far from her thoughts... she describes having dreams about it.'
The court heard that because of the abuse the victim 'rejected the idea of ever marrying or having a sexual relationship with a man of her choosing' because of the impact of what she had suffered.
Judge Khokhar adjourned sentencing until August 2 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
At the close of the Liverpool trial, Judge Clifton dismissed the gang's claims that there was no 'racial or cultural' element to their crimes.
He said 'one of the factors' leading to their abuse of their victims 'was the fact that they were not part of your community or religion'.

The judge said some of the men claimed their arrest 'was triggered by race'.
But, he added: 'That is nonsense. What triggered this prosecution was your lust and greed.'
Ahmed and the nine other men were convicted of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children under the age of 16.
He was also convicted of two counts of rape, aiding and abetting a rape, sexual assault and a count of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation.
He was previously banned from the court for his sentencing hearing because of his threatening behaviour and for calling the Judge Clifton a 'racist bastard'.
Judge Clifton called the defendant an 'unpleasant and hypocritical bully'.
In his latest trial, Ahmed rounded on the jury, police, the prosecutor, the media, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Margaret Thatcher and made personal comments about a Crown Prosecution Service case worker.
He claimed in court that the case against him was a racist conspiracy.

The news that Labour councillor Aftab Hussain has been 'promoted' to Chairman of the Pennines Township Committee has been unpopular amongst the people of Rochdale.

Hussain gave a positive character reference for Abdul Qayyum, who was later convicted of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child.

Both Hussain and former mayor Zulfiquar Ali, who stepped down, appeared as character witnesses for Qayyum.
Ali has since called his decision as a “silly mistake”. Hussain, however, remains in his role as a Labour councillor in the Firgrove and Smallbridge ward, and is now chariman of a Township committee.
When asked their thoughts on Hussain’s position, the people of Rochdale were unanimous. A Harris, who works in the town centre, said: “It’s just Rochdale all over, it’s an absolute joke. He should have been sacked, never mind standing down. It infuriates me.”

Richard Brockley said: “I don’t think he should have kept his job, and I don’t think he should be earning any more either. I think it’d be the same though in any other town.”

A resident who did not want to be named said: “He should have been out of the job the moment he wrote the letter. This town only protects certain people, and we can’t do anything about it. Have the police just turned a blind eye?”

One of the integral roles of a councillor is that of a corporate parent, a role that gives responsibility to all councillors for the welfare of the town’s children.

Jean Ashworth is an ex-councillor. She said: “Corporate parenting is one of the most important roles a councillor undertakes. It involves protecting, supporting and being there for all vulnerable children.

“Councillor Hussain should have known better than to support a suspect. Is an apology enough? At the end of the day the man was convicted – Hussain has gone against this poor girl.”
